Months ago a comedy sketch aired in China about a fictional company called "Pretend to Work" where people pay to come to the office and slack off. Now, a number of real-world businesses have made that a reality — and The Dial's Lavender Au says it's a consequence of China's economic downtown. She visited one "fake office" to see what happens there, who rents space in it (often they're new entrepreneurs whose businesses aren't yet profitable) and what it says about traditional office work. "Ultimately, pretending to work was about building something new out of shame and disappointment," writes Au.
