The group Film Workers for Palestine has released an open letter signed by more than 4,000 people who are pledging not to work with Israeli film institutions that have been "implicated in genocide and apartheid against the Palestinian people," NBC reports. Some of Hollywood's highest-profile people are signees, including directors Ava DuVernay and Jonathan Glazer, and actors Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix, Javier Bardem and Olivia Colman. The organization has made it clear that the pledge does not prohibit people from working with Israeli individuals. "This refusal takes aim at institutional complicity, not identity," the group states. In Hollywood, many people who have spoken out in support of Palestine have been accused of antisemitism and suffered professional consequences — Susan Sarandon was dropped by her agent, while Melissa Barrera lost her role in the "Scream" franchise. #Hollywood #Entertainment #Cinema #Movies #Film #Palestine #Gaza #FilmWorkersForPalestine
Back in the 1980s, on the set of the Tom Hanks movie "Splash," his young son Colin met John Candy. More than 40 years later, Colin has directed "John Candy: I Like Me," a documentary about the beloved comedy actor, who died in 1994. He spoke to [@IndieWire]( ) about his earliest impressions of Candy — "I just saw him as like, that’s one of my dad’s friends" — why he was initially reluctant to make the documentary, and how you make a movie about someone who was both phenomenally talented, and universally adored. "I always go, 'OK, but what is the film? What is the story that you’re actually really trying to tell? What is it saying?' Because, otherwise, I don’t want to just do a visual Wikipedia entry." #Movies #Entertainment #Film #Cinema #Documentary #JohnCandy #ColinHanks
Texas A&M University has fired a professor over course instruction related to gender identity. In a now-viral video, Melissa McCoul, who taught English, mentioned gender and sexuality, at which point a student said, "I'm not entirely sure this is legal to be teaching," and cited Trump's executive order on "gender ideology." McCoul disagreed with the student, recommended that she speak to the department head, and asked her to leave the class. The video was circulated by Texas state representative Brian Harrison (a Republican) on X on Monday morning and by Tuesday afternoon, McCoul had been fired. The head of the English department and a dean were also removed from their posts. A lawyer for McCoul told NBC that McCoul's course content was consistent with the catalog and description, and that she is exploring legal action. #University #GenderStudies #Texas #USNews #TrumpAdministration #LGBTQ #Gender
