NYC Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani is bringing fun to the race for City Hall. On Saturday, his campaign held a scavenger hunt. [@aftermath.site]( )'s Riley MacLeod writes about what it was like to participate. "Being fun is no guarantee that you’ll make a good mayor, but Mamdani’s campaign has embraced what seems like a genuine joy and love of what the city has to offer," MacLeod writes. "Several of his campaign events have involved stunts out on the streets, walking the length of Manhattan or racing a slow bus; these kinds of things get Mamdani’s name and face out there while also portraying him as someone who actually likes being here." #NewYork #NewYorkCityMayor #ZohranMamdani #ScavengerHunt
Britpop band Oasis has made it to North America after touring the U.K. and Ireland for six weeks, with neither of the Gallagher brothers throwing a single punch (as far as we know). [@USAToday]( ) reports on how things went last night at Rogers Arena, Toronto. The band will play one more night there, before heading to the U.S. for five shows. "What Oasis has brought with this tour, perhaps inadvertently, is a communal spirit," writes Melissa Ruggieri. "New best friends were made – at least for 120 minutes on a rainy weekend night – as beers were hoisted and lyrics were shouted." #Music #LiveMusic #Oasis #Toronto #Entertainment #LiamGallagher #NoelGallager
Here’s one for all of you who’ve ever dared to stir the pot. Penelope Barker was the wife of a Colonial agent tasked with representing North Carolina’s interests in England. This was in 1774, some 146 years before women were granted the right to vote in the United States, when a woman’s political beliefs were largely ignored. That didn’t stop Barker from convening the women in her hometown of Edenton, North Carolina, to support the boycott of British goods. Donald Trump is attacking the Smithsonian Institute, with claims it focuses too much on slavery, among other things. Clint Smith, who wrote the 2022 book "How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning with the History of Slavery Across America," writes for [@TheAtlantic]( ) about the horrors of slavery in the United States, the psychological pain it wrought, and the importance of remembering it. He says he is sometimes tempted, on encountering another instance of the Trump administration's racist antagonism, to let it be — and yet, he will not. "This is part of the reality of Black life in this country: We must make a record of those forces that seek to erase us and erase our histories so that future generations know we did not simply accept it. Our ancestors’ words remind us that we never have," he concludes. #TrumpAdministration #BlackHistory #BlackMastodon @npub1e4zk...xz2t #History #AmericanHistory #Smithsonian
On April 1, Mohammad Halimi, a 52-year-old exiled Afghan scholar who had been assisting U.S. diplomats in understanding his homeland, learned that his name had appeared in a viral post on X, shared by Elon Musk. The post declared that Halimi was a former Taliban member, and that payments to him for his work for the United States Institute of Peace constituted support for militants. Halimi had worked for the Taliban government in the 1990s, but subsequently switched sides and served as a cabinet minister in the U.S.-backed Afghan government. The Taliban had attempted to assassinate him three times. And the U.S. government — including Musk and DOGE — knew all of this. Musk's post exposed Halimi and endangered him, and those family members who are still in Afghanistan. He immediately began to receive threatening messages. A week after Musk's April 1 social media post, three of his family members were taken by the Taliban in Kabul, questioned and beaten. @ProPublica reports on everything that happened, how DOGE took things to another level on Fox News, and how they continue to justify their actions. #DOGE #ElonMusk #Afghanistan #Twitter #MohammadHalimi
The newest target for the anti-woke brigade: Cracker Barrel. The U.S. restaurant chain has redesigned its logo, simplifying it and removing the image of the man sitting next to a wooden barrel. Donald Trump Jr. implied on X that the changes might be motivated by DEI efforts. "Cracker Barrel has fallen," declared the far-right account @endwokeness. Find [@huffingtonpost]( )'s summary of the social media furor at the first link. At the second, [@CBSNews]( ) reports that the brand has lost almost $100 million in market value since the announcement was made. #CrackerBarrel #Restaurants #FoodCulture #USPolitics #Culture
