It's been 2 years since I made a #Linux desktop environment Tier List (I was waiting for a stable Cosmic release...), so I felt it was time to get this thing out, because things have moved quite a bit in terms of how desktops work, and how I feel about them. So, here's my ranking, and why I ranked each desktop as high, or as low as I did:
Last week, I managed to delete 6h of work on a video, which drove me down a nice rabbit hole of software recovery tools. While I was unsuccessful in recovering my work, it did make me realize that #Linux is simply a more fun experience than any other OS, even when things go wrong. Here is my thought process in a fun little video:
Time for another community poll! In this one, I ask all of you how important Open Source / Free Software is to you, and how much of your daily system is made of open source software. I ditched Google Forms for Cryptpad, hopefully this works well enough! Poll will close next Wednesday, the 30th. Don't hesitate to share it widely so we have a solid amount of answers :)
#Ubuntu 25.04 will be released today (maybe it already is), so here is my look at this new update! The TLDR is: I thought it wouldn't have that much, but it turns out that between #GNOME 48, APT 3.0, Nvidia dynamic boost, and a new default app, there's a lot to cover! Also, props to Xubuntu for the move to XFCE 4.20, that's going to be a big change for Xubuntu users!
Time for this week's #Linux and #OpenSource News video! This week, we have #Firefox adding experimental AI tools to their nightly builds, #Wayland gaining window position and size restore capabilities, the Framework 12 going on preorder (even in the US after some tariffs shenanigans), and some leaks about #Valve's new VR headet:
I did a few benchmarks to see if the #Linux desktop environment you're running on your system has any impact on the actual performance, and resource consumption of your system, and made a little video out of it! I used Top, Geekbench, Unigine Heaven, and did some battery life testing, all on #Fedora 42 beta, on the @SLIMBOOK (Official) Evo 14, here are the results, and the conclusions:
To be clear: I’m not saying the GIMP name is awesome and should be kept at all costs. It can change. What I’m saying is: focus on the cool stuff first, praise the devs for their cool work. Don’t turn all the cool stuff into a battle. We can talk about the name AND also think the devs delivered some great stuff. Firefox is adding excellent features. Sure, the Mozilla stuff sucks, but the browser is great. We can give praise AND also raise issues, not everything needs to be back or white.
GIMP: makes incredible progress towards being an amazing image editing tool People: « the name has a kinky or bad connotation in one language, and there are no screenshots, WTH.» Priorities. They’re important.
As promised, here is an interview with @npub1uy3h...jrxl from #Thunderbird, on the whole #Mozilla and #Firefox terms of use situation. We talk about why this had to happen, how Thunderbird will handle their own Terms of Use, what's happening at Mozilla, and what's changing.
I’ve been contacted by someone close to the #Mozilla story. They’ll gather some more info and we’ll record an interview to shed light on how this came to be, and what’s being done to try and improve things at Mozilla from the inside. Stay tuned!
