During our visit to Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre (HESC) last month, the heat was intense, and the baby rhinos found comfort huddling close together in the shade.
They spend their days in the reserve, being nurtured and cared for until they are ready to return to the wild. Among them was Angie, a little rhino receiving her feeding session. We’ll share more about her soon.
This visit also brought back memories of Esmé, a rhino we first met five years ago when she was just a baby.
At that time, HESC was thriving, supported by many visitors who helped sustain its vital work. However, as with many NGOs in South Africa, the outbreak of COVID-19 brought significant challenges, reducing support and making their mission even harder.
Despite these difficulties, Esmé has flourished. Today, she plays a crucial role as an allomother, providing care and guidance to the orphaned baby rhinos that arrive at the center. Her nurturing presence is invaluable, and she remains at HESC to help the little ones thrive.
Esmé’s story is a beautiful reminder of resilience, hope, and the impact of dedicated care.
