π§ Mood.
The 1984 Summer Olympic Games were a PR client. My brief was to promote performers at the Opening Ceremonyβproviding short bios to TV news and sport shows in the US in the weeks before the Ceremony.
One afternoon in June, I met Etta James. We sat in a video editing suite in Burbank together to watch her clip. I knew after a half-minute she liked it. She was nodding in my peripheral vision.
Her verdict: "Thank you, baby. I like it."
A few weeks later, she would perform "When the Saints Go Marching In" with a drumline and large gospel choir that made me cry.
I was thinking about Etta James todayβa gifted and under-appreciated artist, and wanted to share a favorite Blues performance.
"I'd Rather Go Blind" (1967).
