CONTEXT: On November 11, 2025, at around 11:50 a.m., Southeast Patrol Division uniformed Officers responded to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon near a residence in the 10300 block of Kalmia Street. The comments of the call indicated the suspect, later identified as 56-year-old Hugo Polanco, was βusing wires as a whip and attempting to hit passersby.β Upon arrival, Officers observed Polanco holding a cluster of metal wires approximately seven and a half feet in length. The Officers ordered Polanco to drop the weapon. He initially complied but then picked it up again and one Officer deployed a 40mm Less Lethal Launcher. Polanco gripped the wires with both hands and charged at an Officer while bringing the weapon over his shoulder in a whipping motion. One Officer fired additional 40mm Less Lethal Launcher rounds which were ineffective and an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS) occurred. Polanco was struck by gunfire and taken into custody without further incident. Los Angeles Fire Department personnel arrived at scene and transported Polanco to a local hospital, where he later died. No officers or other community members were injured during this incident. The weapon was recovered at scene and booked as evidence. (LAPD / News release)
