Let people cry! I'm no fan of the Chancellor, but: there are any number of non-work reasons why someone might be in tears at work. Attacking her for it is pretty damn low. The Tory spokesman getting it wrong: "a 'personal matter' doesn't really clear it up… you normally tell people what the personal matter is." The SNP getting it right: "I don't know why the chancellor was upset in the chamber today… seeing another person in distress is always very difficult, and we are wishing her well."

The autopsy determined that she was a cis woman who had given birth at least once. But they couldn't identify her. In 2015, some cold-case investigators ran a DNA test and discovered she had XY chromosomes. Without the knowledge that she was trans, they would never have found out her name.

I have an "information radiator", i.e. a monitor on the wall that displays stuff. It's a homebrew web application, written in ordinary JavaScript; it has permission to make http requests to anything. It lives behind a NAT firewall. I want a particular server to be able to ask it to display a message. Obviously I could roll my own protocol with Ajax, but I'd rather use something standard. Back in the day I'd have used XMPP. What do people use now?
In March, the state of Utah passed a law[1] restricting which flags could be flown by city councils. This stopped the council of Salt Lake City from flying the pride, trans, and Juneteenth flags. One of the kinds of flag allowed by the new law is an official city flag. Stats help? I have a sequence of bytes "a[]" where I know the mean and standard deviation. Suppose I want to group a into "n" bands (not necessarily contiguous in the original "a"). What I want is a lookup table "b[256]" where, for each byte in a[], b[a] will yield a number 0..n-1 with approx equal probability across the whole of a. I think I used to know how to do this, but A-levels were a long time ago.
