"I've long maintained that the threat from AI to workers isn't that AI can do your job – it's that an AI salesman can convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job" - @Cory Doctorow #tech #AI #ML #labor
"Their wives protected them from interruptions; their housekeepers and maids brought them breakfast and coffee at odd hours; their nannies kept their children out of their hair. Martha Freud not only laid out Sigmund’s clothes every morning, she even put the toothpaste on his toothbrush. Marcel Proust’s housekeeper, Celeste, not only brought him his daily coffee, croissants, newspapers and mail on a silver tray, but was always on hand whenever he wanted to chat, sometimes for hours. Some women are mentioned only for what they put up with, like Karl Marx’s wife – unnamed in the book – who lived in squalor with the surviving three of their six children while he spent his days writing at the British Museum. Gustav Mahler married a promising young composer named Alma, then forbade her from composing, saying there could be only one in the family. Instead, she was expected to keep the house utterly silent for him. After his midday swim, he’d whistle for Alma to join him on long, silent walks while he composed in his head. She’d sit for hours on a branch or in the grass, not daring to disturb him. “There’s such a struggle going on in me!” Alma wrote in her diary. “And a miserable longing for someone who thinks OF ME, who helps me to find MYSELF! I’ve sunk to the level of a housekeeper!”" - For more on this subject, I recommend the book "who cooked Adam Smith's dinner". #feminism #patriarchy
dreamed that there was a movie where some millenials come upon a group of gothy/punky gen z'ers, because both were out behind the event venue catching a breather from the busy main event. the two groups become friends and bond over weird stuff. is this millenial wish fulfillment - that our old weird nerdiness is relevant and interesting to younger weird nerds? probably lol. #dreams
"She wanted me to figure out all of the things that need done, and devise my own method of task management. I wish I could remember what seemed so unreasonable to me about that at the time." - #relationships #HeteroStuff
In case you were wondering what the endgame of mass incarceration is, here is its purest form: "No state has a longer, more profit-driven history of contracting prisoners out to private companies than Alabama. With a sprawling labor system that dates back more than 150 years — including the brutal convict leasing era that replaced slavery — it has constructed a template for the commercialization of mass incarceration. Best Western, Bama Budweiser and Burger King are among the more than 500 businesses to lease incarcerated workers from one of the most violent, overcrowded and unruly prison systems in the U.S. in the past five years alone, The Associated Press found as part of a two-year investigation into prison labor. The cheap, reliable labor force has generated more than $250 million for the state since 2000 through money garnished from prisoners’ paychecks." - #alabama #labor #prison #work #incarceration
Bears as huckleberry dispersers: ""Bears don't just eat huckleberries—they help them grow in new places," says lead researcher Aza Fynley Kuijt, from UBC's Faculty of Forestry." "Researchers found that seeds consumed and defecated by bears had significantly higher germination rates (up to 28.5%) compared to seeds left inside intact berries (0.2%). The key factor is the removal of germination inhibitors in the berry pulp during digestion. Using GPS data from 74 collared grizzly bears, the study estimated that bears disperse 50% of consumed seeds at least one kilometer away from their feeding sites, with potential maximum distances of up to seven kilometers." **rubs forehead and mutters to self**: as if we don't have enough problems: "the choice to burn up satellites in the atmosphere may pose a significant risk to the Earth’s climate and the ozone layer, through the resulting alteration of atmospheric chemistry. . . . with a typical satellite weighing of order 1,000 kg [2,200 lb], and being primarily metallic, the steady state injection of metals into the stratosphere by vaporization of satellites would be at least 8,000 tons per year." #space #SpaceJunk #starlink #climate #environment #pollution #garbage #trash #nature #air
Although my folks' area in the north Chicago burbs lacks quite a bit in nature, beauty, walkability, and weather, it has a great richness in diversity and gigantic beautiful ethnic grocery stores. Today I went to a huge Polish store (that my folks didn't even know was there lol). It had hot, fresh pierogis with a large variety of fillings, a large cake zone, a big deli, and pickles and fresh kraut in barrels (I love fresh kraut - it's one of my favorite foods). I also went to a large Indian grocery store that had a human-size Ganesh altar in the entryway, and an entire section for ghee. Diversity: it has many delicious benefits 😋 #chicago #diversity #food
Fffffuuuu: "Wildlife monitoring technologies used to intimidate and spy on women, study finds" Male villagers AND local governments using wildlife cameras to spy on women 😫: "Remotely operated camera traps, sound recorders and drones are increasingly being used in conservation science to monitor wildlife and natural habitats, and to keep watch on protected natural areas. But Cambridge researchers studying a forest in northern India have found that the technologies are being deliberately misused by local governments and male villagers to keep watch on women without their consent." - https://phys.org/news/2024-11-wildlife-technologies-intimidate-spy-women.amp Where is a woman free from patriarchy?? I wish I knew... It seems like if men are given a chance to take advantage of women, they'll use it 😭 #feminism #patriarchy #surveillance #conservation #science #wildlifemonitoring
