Lammy has claimed to have been unaware of the hunger strikes, telling the sister of Kamran Ahmed, who was hospitalised last month, that he did not “know anything about this” when he was confronted by protesters in his constituency on Friday.
Corbyn visited his constituent Amu Gib, who has refused food for nearly 39 days as of Wednesday, at HMP Bronzefield at the start of this week.
Calling the situation “an emergency that should be the front-page of every newspaper in Britain”, Corbyn told Novara Media that Gib, having been in prison since July and expecting trial in January 2027, they were suffering “cruel and unusual punishment”.
He said: “They are taking hunger strike action in order to draw attention to the fact they are remand prisoners – they haven’t been convicted of anything. They could easily be released on remand.”
Corbyn added: “What impressed me more than anything were the principles and determination to try and do something to stop the disgusting sale of arms to Israel, the manufacturing of arms in Britain to help Israel achieve the genocide in Gaza.”
