The Healing Hideout on Instagram: "How could I forget lobotomies! I thought, “on that note, there were enough traumatizing medical procedures done to women that it could be its own post…” so here we are.
Let’s talk about it. Lobotomies weren’t fringe. They were widely used on women who were labeled emotional, resistant, or “hard to manage,” and women received them at disproportionately high rates. This was part of a medical system that routinely treated women’s emotional responses as pathology. For decades, psychiatric and gynecological practices included institutionalization without due process, surgical “behavioral correction,” and postpartum isolation. Women could lose children, autonomy, and legal rights through the medical system and not because of illness, but because someone else said they were unwell. For women of color, state-sanctioned sterilization lasted into the 1970s, upheld by rulings like Buck v. Bell and later challenged in Madrigal v. Quilligan. These weren’t rare events. They were formal policies, medical teachings, and government-funded programs. When people romanticize “how women were treated back then,” it’s important to remember the historical record. Many medical interventions weren’t designed to heal women, but to silence, regulate, or control them.
