White Flame in Shallow Water I like this image of a snowy egret (Egretta thula) moving through a tidal pool. My usual preference is for a more symmetrical composition, with the subject centered to emphasize balance. Here, though, the off‑center placement and the visible motion tell a richer visual story. The lifted leg, the ripples trailing behind, and the open beak all suggest a moment unfolding rather than a static pose. It feels less like a portrait and more like a narrative—an image that carries the rhythm of movement and the quiet drama of the hunt. Good morning. ☀️☀️☀️ 8 December 2025 My coffee is cooling, and I probably ought to get up to top off the cup. It’s still drinkable, though, and with my feet propped on the edge of the desk, it may be a few minutes before I muster the motivation to walk the thirty feet into the kitchen. Speaking of coffee, I went online yesterday to buy the same gourmet beans I picked up last month, only to find the price had climbed yet again. My first reaction was a startled oh wow, followed quickly by the decision to wait it out and settle for a less expensive brand. Still, I can’t help but wonder how much of that price is tied to tariffs. The administration may have lifted the coffee duties, but surely there are lingering adjustments baked into the market. After all, tariffs had spiked to nearly 50% just weeks ago. Add in Brazil’s droughts and Vietnam’s floods, and supply is bound to tighten. Shipping across South America only complicates matters—though the danger seems to fall more on small boats than on large vessels. Gunboat diplomacy appears to be the order of the day in those waters, with the navy striking and sinking small craft. It’s hard to make sense of. If traffickers are losing boats, surely, they’ve already found other routes. Assuming they’re clever enough to adapt, what exactly are these destroyed boats carrying? It can’t be that the navy is blasting away indiscriminately, Yosemite Sam–style… can it? I hope not. Still, some of the targeting feels questionable, and I know one thing for certain: I wouldn’t want to be fishing in that region right now. Meanwhile, the price of beans continues to rise. “What protectionism teaches us, is to do to ourselves in time of peace what enemies seek to do to us in time of war.” – Henry George “Gunboat diplomacy is the old way of saying: we will use force to get our way, without calling it war.” – Paul Pillar #photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #morning #sun #coffee #trade #tariffs #gunboat_diplomacy image
Brushstrokes of Barbados This is a photograph of striped Barbados lilies (Hippeastrum striatum)—white blooms set vividly against a darkened background. My wife planted them in large pots just outside our back door over a decade ago, and they’re still going strong, blooming with quiet beauty year after year. image
Feathered Whisper Among the Grass Here is a Pine Warbler (Setophaga pinus) I spotted foraging on the ground. I often mistake these for goldfinches since they appear around the same time. At first, I even hoped it might be a Yellow Warbler, but the Pine Warbler’s distinctive yellow eye ring makes the identification clear. The photographs I share here don’t appear as vivid as they do in my Pixel’s gallery. To make them load more easily, I reduce their size and slightly lower their quality. Gray Feathered Charm Here’s an image of a Tufted Titmouse (Baeolophus bicolor) that I captured recently. image
Downy in the Dried Leaves Charlie and I sat outside this morning, watching for birds. There weren’t many about—just a couple of chickadees and sparrows. Off in the distance, I spotted a chubby, drowsy-looking Downy Woodpecker (Dryobates pubescens), clinging quietly to a tree. Good morning. 🌹🌹🌹 6 December 2025 As I was walking down the street one day with Charlie, a fellow I knew from my last job pulled over while driving by, and we spent a few minutes catching up. This was maybe a month ago. He filled me in on the latest gossip—things I’m mostly oblivious to these days, especially since I stopped working. He still has more contact with the old crowd than I do. Anyway, he reported that a mutual acquaintance, someone who had also worked at the same place in a mid-management role, came up hot on a drug test and was immediately fired. Interesting, I thought. I personally worked there for 17 years, and although drug testing was always a possibility, not once did they ever administer one to employees. The rumor is that marijuana was the source of the infraction. Since the work involves a government contract, such things are still very much frowned upon. Of course, my information is at least third-hand—passed from someone who heard it from someone else, who probably heard it from yet another source. Still, I have to assume other employees would notice the absence of a familiar figure who had been on the job for over 20 years. The man I spoke with also mentioned that marijuana is legal in Louisiana. It isn’t—except for medical use. I suppose I can understand his confusion, with so many states around the country declaring it legal for recreational purposes. But not Louisiana. “We’re not ones to go round spreading rumors, Why really, we’re just not the gossiping kind. No you’ll never hear one of us repeating gossip; So you better be sure and listen close the first time!” - Hee Haw #photo #photography #photographer #photographylovers #nature #morning #plant #flower #rose #gossip #drugtest #marajuana image
