The rate of global sea level rise doubled during the past three decades "If this trajectory of sea level rise continues over the next three decades, sea levels will increase by an additional 169 mm globally." https://www.nature.com/articles/s43247-024-01761-5 #sealevelrise #climatechange #climatecrisis @npub13r6a...7ugf image
AI project allows for ‘chat’ with British Museum objects ‘The Living Museum’ project offers an AI-powered interactive exploration of 1.2 million objects from the Museum’s collection records. (A striking example of how museums can employ generative AI to make their collections more accessible.) #museum @Global Museum @Maritimes Museum Hamburg image

Excellent story (shared): Scared by Helene, Everyone in This Florida Beach Town Evacuated for Milton Over time, the question of whether to stay or go will likely become a question of whether to keep living in coastal or low-lying areas at all. ((As the story implies, answers to that question will be strongly affected by wealth; far fewer low- or mid-income people will live right on the Florida coast.)) #hurricane #Milton #climatechange #climatecrisis #sealevelrise image
Could a big hurricane whack New England? ‘More of a question of when than if.’ https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/10/12/science/hurricane-new-england-at-risk-climate-change/ (paywall alas) "The region is yet to experience a hurricane in the era of rising seas. Sea levels along the coast of Boston are about 14 inches higher than they were when records began in 1921... Boston is particularly vulnerable.. Because #Boston sits in a bay... all of that water pushing in from the Atlantic would funnel into the city." More on the 1938 #hurricane: image
Watching Hurricane Milton head toward Florida's western coast is like watching a jumbo jet crash in slow motion. I've spent a lot of time in Florida and have been fond of the state and many of its residents. My father spent his last years in Lee County, where Hurricane Ian killed more than 60 people in 2022, and which seems to be near the cross-hairs for Milton as well. The Gulf of Mexico is an ever-hotter hotbed for hurricanes, but New England also gets its share. #Milton #hurricane image
Outstanding story by Kimberley Brown for Hakai, a remarkable magazine on coastal science and societies that shuts down at the end of the year: Trapped in the Tide of Organized Crime How Ecuador’s growing armed struggle is affecting its traditional crabbing communities. #environment #coast #Ecuador #fishing image
Boston needs billions to protect itself from sea level rise. Can the city find the money? (no signs yet!) It has a 47-mile-long coastline that’s vulnerable to coastal flooding during storms https://www.bostonglobe.com/2024/10/03/science/climate-change-seawall-boston-michelle-wu (paywall, sorry) #sealevelrise #climatechange #climatecrisis #Boston #environment #hurricane image
Participatory AI highlights paths to sustainability Sara Beery combines machine learning with human expertise to better understand a rapidly changing planet. One goal is early-warning earth monitoring systems that can flag ecosystem concerns in real time and high detail. "What are the mitigating actions that we can take ahead of time, to be a little bit more proactive instead of reactive in our management strategies for the Earth?” #environment #MIT #climatecrisis #AI image
Who Will Care for Americans Left Behind by Climate Migration? As people move away from flooding and heat, new research suggests that those who remain will be older, poorer and more vulnerable. "Many of the effects of climate change on American life will be subtle and unexpected. The future demographics of this country might look entirely unfamiliar. It’s past time to give real thought to who might get left behind." #climatechange #hurricane #Helene #climatecrisis image
