After retiring my old desktop into a home server role, migrating everything off my old server to the new server, and adding one extra CCTV camera, the house night-time idle power usage went from 220W to 240W. Not as bad as I'd feared, considering the new home server has an RTX2080 in it for video processing. #homelab
Remember that 32GB of DDR5 RAM I bought for my new computer a month ago? Remember how it went up AUD$130 during the week between when I ordered it and when the retailer cancelled my order and tried to charge me for the new price? It's now increased ANOTHER AUD$130. Insane. 55% price increase in a month.
The look of wonder on a child's face when I adjust a game's graphical settings on their aging laptop to make it run at a playable framerate. In that brief moment I AM a computer wizard.
Huzzah! It has finally started to rain in #carina. Phew.
I switched our energy retailer from Amber Electric to Localvolts, and I've started to play with their pricing API. Fun stuff! I recorded a quick video showing some interesting subtleties in how pricing is different between the AEMO wholesale price, amber and localvolts. Let me know if you have any questions, and I can make a follow-up video. As always: This is a solo mastodon instance, so boosts = ❀️ #solar #battery #renewable #australia #amberelectric #localvolts
Time for some last-minute #pottery firing. Gotta get a christmas present ready for grandma.
Man no wonder #protobuf is not more popular. This is a pain in the butt. I thought the developer experience might've improved in the five years since I had to use them. Nope, you're still downloading zip files from github repos and extracting them into your path, then installing separate language-specic tools into different directories. You'd think using protobuf in #golang would be more straightforward.
I just relocated my home server to the undercroft with all my networking gear. Shortly afterwards I get several healthchecks.io warnings. All my watchdogs failed to fire. After some investigation I found my IPv6 outbound had stopped working. Huh? I didn't touch any networking gear? Maybe I had unsaved settings in my router and I bumped the power without realising? It recovered without me changing anything. Aussie Broadband blip?
I didn't drink alcohol until my late 20s, so I am deliberately exploring different spirits and cocktails to see what I missed out on. I asked for recommendations on rum and someone suggested DiplomΓ‘tico Reserva. It is delicious! On ice, with ginger beer and lime, or coke. Great stuff. I thought I'd try some Bundaberg rum for comparison, and holy hell this is vile. It tastes like paint stripper. Bleugh. Does anyone have a suggestion for making it drinkable?
Phew. It's real hot up there, but the cable is run. Gotta go terminate it to the patch panel now. I wanted to get it further into the corner, but there was an uncooperative ceiling joist.
