Israel is set to begin construction next month on a bypass road designed to seal off the heart of the occupied West Bank from Palestinians, a move widely seen as cementing de facto annexation and dealing a major blow to the prospects of a viable Palestinian state.
The road is a central component of Israel’s long-standing E1 settlement project east of occupied Jerusalem, an illegal expansion that would sever the territorial contiguity of the occupied West Bank and further entrench Israeli occupation control. Palestinian movement would be restricted, while Israeli settlers would gain uninterrupted access across the area.
