NEW | Columbia University’s newly appointed president, Jennifer Mnookin, has drawn sharp criticism from pro-Palestine activists for using force against Gaza solidarity protesters at her previous institution.
A Columbia group, CU Apartheid Divest, condemned Mnookin on social media for ordering riot police to “beat up and arrest students” during a Gaza Solidarity Encampment at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
The group said she would “fit in perfectly” with Columbia’s administration, which they describe as authoritarian and hostile to Palestinian solidarity.
The controversy stems from May 2024, when Mnookin reportedly authorized police action to dismantle encampments set up by Students for Justice in Palestine and the Wisconsin Young Democratic Socialists of America, who were demanding divestment from Israel.
The student newspaper The Daily Cardinal reported that 34 people were arrested during the raid.
