Phallus paintings in Bhutan are esoteric symbols,which have their origins in the Chimi Lhakhang monastery, built in honour of Lama Drukpa Kunley (1455–1529) who was popularly known as the "Mad Saint" for his unorthodox ways of teaching.

By 1900 this had fallen to 10 million, and by 1979 down to 1.3 million. By the mid-1990s they were below 300,000.
