In August 2021 a social housing unit for substance abusers in Bergen, Norway (22 apartments, 30 residents) was destroyed in a catastrophic fire. Unusually there were no casualties at all. Although the interiors were sensibly built with fire alarms and sprinkler systems the fire is thought to have started outside on a balcony on the ground floor. The main reason for the zero casualties is given as the unusually "connected" residents, very different from normal Norwegian apartment buildings. Everyone basically knew everyone else, their habits, any visitors, physical and mental health status, habits and handicaps. By the time the police had arrived the tenants had already finished evacuating. Even though there were neighborly conflicts (not everyone got along), when the fire started (since the source was outside fire alarms and sprinklers were mostly irrelevant, only a quarter of the resident had even heard an alarm) the residents acted fast. Being connected to the people around you can save your life.
