The idea and rationale behind the State of Manchuria was to be one of racial harmony and peace. It was from the start a multi-racial project acknowledging the already existing racial and ethnic make up of the state. Utopian, absolutely. Air Cadet Imatomi describes his entrance and first year in elementary school. It must have been quite an experience. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/ed9b2872acdabb5b488fcbabc43cba732c95ec0360453e608f88e6a6bb62c424.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/9122a41d8761fa2325a0d249ea0d084da98d722c6b798696aa0a9dec7e62bdae.file
Menko is a traditional game still played in Japan. The object is to throw your card onto a lot of cards belonging to all players and by the force and wind etc. "flip" it. If you flip any wagered cards you can keep them. Very simple and very silly. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/1a057fe1aab13fba508036321906a3539461fc511153455764af9d2aeddb9c27.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/9bad56aa04b1002f5aa1f25f47ceab5441da0bd49cd0e049c81553951d2cdaaf.file
Reading the memoirs of Flight Cadet Imatomi Akira (1929-2024) and his recollections of growing up in the State of Manchuria. That last sentence is rather beautiful. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/c34c4c8bb8279b65ba46c7e1010e56dea3db79fdc34ce2607feea83c381b98b1.file

"Road and highway networks have reshaped much of the U.S. over the last century, linking rural towns to booming metros and expanding access to jobs and services. But the fiscal, environmental, and social cost has been steep. Americans now drive 4,000 to 6,000 more miles a year on average than peer nations, contributing to pollution, greenhouse gases, infrastructure wear, and fatalities." https://hell.twtr.plus/media/be94223446dca7823f64f6ea2a87860215422aae65b9e7de8d65e3590f3f74c2.file
Not surprisingly the average homes in Jamaica and other Caribbean islands are poorly built and poorly maintained, despite the fact that local vernacular labor intensive but cheap building materials are far better at resisting hurricanes, we see the usual unreinforced concrete blocks and uninsulated corrugated iron roofs. The only good thing about these roof is that they are fast to put up and decent against normal rain. However, it won't be easy for even the staunchest supporters of these countries to motivate this incredibly nonchalant attitude to their own building stock. Poverty isn't the cause or root of this. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/182a4ddfc4a7261d812352a25c38d00a56133606b77cdb264fe2dc407987e7b2.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/ab577754bf75b0f7fcd9c55c29a5603a61d0d1a85a241799efcf4c281f584b8f.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/951802f84ebe76417c4526f8c63181d5d9d9c644cc901be41abb4b9a52e5d8a3.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/efa99344973d4f0b32fa847910beb6aa8aaa369143fb1d5aae878d864af2709a.file
When Swedish city planner Olof Hallman drew up the plans for the arctic city of Kiruna in 1900 he picked a south facing slope, streets were aligned to the topography for both aesthetics (Hallman was inspired by Camillo Sitte) and to avoid windy gridded streets. Large squares and parks were avoided for smaller green spaces at intersections. When the city was relocated in the 21st century the opposite of Hallman's planning happened: the city was located in a hollow where cold air pooled. Streets were gridded and flanked by tall buildings driving arctic winds downs to street level. The result is an on average 10°C colder city. https://hell.twtr.plus/media/3ef59fc34d965037a3d46d35918dca36c3b4f70cf68fc64a5da88472384bda16.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/9f7e58ed370830ce4ea1b3e4fb43fb728c50575c04c9a7e5c0d1e46695d6c303.file https://hell.twtr.plus/media/85e321fb7ef88e21a437b557fad4036aa1be070ff4dd9dd732e34d44352f0d20.file
