Until yesterday, it was entirely unthinkable that Israel would even consider attacking a gulf country. The bombing of Doha now marks a new era! The whole brand of gulf countries is their safety & stability, & they spend so much political & financial capital to ensure this remains the case. Gulf countries brand themselves as hubs for finance, investments, diplomacy & mediation. The slightest attack on any of them shatters their whole brand, destabilises them & sends investors & visitors fleeing away (think of how the Houthis pressured Saudi Arabia into a ceasefire in Yemen by drone-bombing Aramco oil facilities a couple of times with limited damage). Israel's assault on Doha sent a message to gulf governments that no matter how many hundreds of billions you pour into the US, UK, EU... or how many US troops you host & American weapons you buy, none of it would buy your safety; those same Western powers will be the first to throw you under the bus for Israel's sake. Also, Arab governments have been telling their people that they need to exercise restraint (vis-a-vis Gaza) to avoid giving Israel a pretext to attack them, but now Netanyahu made it clear that no matter what those countries do, Israel will attack them unconstrained & without consequences.

Omar is a well-known critic of Hamas in Gaza. He was beaten by thugs for his opinions. He condemned Oct 7 & calls for peace even after Israel killed his family & bombed his home. None of this helped him a jot to get out of Gaza. None of the people exploiting his story came to his help. What message does this send? Where did all the “do you condemn Khamas” crowd go? Why isn’t anyone helping him? Isn’t he a “perfect victim” from their perspective? What does a Palestinian have to do to become worthy of life in their eyes? Or is it like Israel says “only a dead Arab is a good Arab”? I hope Omar stays safe & well & gets help soon. His story, like many others, is a stain on self-righteous folks who keep parroting the line “if only Gazans condemned Oct 7… if only Gazans chose peace… if only… if only…” These are all deflections, talking points designed to whitewash genocide while blaming its victims! Have you ever heard a serious American analyst say "if we end the war in Iraq/Afghanistan... Al-Qaeda would do 9/11 all over again"? The argument that ending the Gaza genocide means another Oct 7 is purely dumb. Both attacks relied on an element of surprise that's now lost How many 9/11-like attacks did the US or any Western country experience since 2001? ZERO. Not for lack of enemies, but b/c those countries & Israel have advanced weapons, large militaries, countless security & intelligence agencies, meticulous surveillance, fortified borders... They can easily defend their borders against a large-scale attack since they now expect those attacks & have raised their preparedness & alertness. Israel makes it sound like if the Gaza genocide ends today, the IDF would leave the gate to Gaza open & unguarded instead of deploying 10 times as many soldiers as there were on Oct 7 Another Oct 7 attack from Gaza is not possible! But if Israel is worried about having to live by the sword, they should end their illegal occupation since that would mean the full dismantling of all Palestinian non-state armed actors.
