Today's espresso, the first of 2024, is pouring nicely. @npub1jcn4...gw7e #espresso image
I really didn't expect my post yesterday about date formats to explode like it did. A lot of passion out there about date formats! I wonder what would have happened if I posted about metric? 😎 Speaking of which, I still use Fahrenheit when referring to water temperatures in coffee brewing, vs. Celsius. Why? Because Fahrenheit has a smaller resolution between numbers than Celsius, ie 202-203F is a smaller temperature change than 93-94C.
One reason why the #LagomMini #coffee #grinder is a finalist in CoffeeGeek's 2023 Product of the Year category is the micron-tight tolerances of its build construction. For example: the tubular grinds chute is embedded in the main body of the grinder. and the fit is down to maybe 20 microns, and uniform. Check out this detailed photo. I honestly don't know of any other PID controlled, 9BAR OPV valve managed, volumetric espresso machine on the market under $300, except for the Breville Bambino (and the Duo Temp if you find it on deep sale price). I do know of PLENTY of pump driven machines under $300 - some as little as $150. But they are generally super crap, with horrible portafilters, aluminum boilers, wide-band temperatures, anemic steam, and very prone to breaking down. #espresso #espressomachines.
There's only two #Breville #espresso machines of note I have never tested. Both are their lowest priced "modern" machines with 54mm portafilters, one with a thermoblock and a horrible UI for pulling a shot manually or steaming, and the other with volumetric controls, their new thermojet heat system, and a tiny footprint. The former is the Duo Temp. The latter is the Bambino. Well, now I have a Bambino to test and review. cc @espresso
Have you seen our First Look for the Superkop ratchet-lever #espresso machine? We had a small house party a few days back, and literally every person was drawn to the Superkop, asking questions. Even if it was just stuffed into a corner near our basement door.
On thing that is a modus operandi with me is that you'll rarely see me actively promote or point people towards the top "coffee stars", IG accounts, YT Influencers, or TikTok trendy folks in anything I write or do. Reason: I feel they already have all the exposure they need or deserve. It's not because I don't think they produce good content. But I will very frequently recommend good sources on these platforms that don't have a gazillion followers, if they are producing great content.
If you're looking for the ideal gift for the #coffee and #espresso nerd in your circle, we have the fully curated and tested suggestions for you, from $10 to $600. Check out our Holiday Gift Lists at CoffeeGeek. You don't have to search in vane through algorithm-spoofed internet searches - we've done that all for you.
Speaking of Youtube and coffee influencers. I'm already noticing a bit of burnout amongst some of the influencers. Less content, at least less relevant content around what made them famous in the first place, and you can almost tell they grow tired of the bullshit subscribe, like and COMMENT" routine, to game the algorithm. For instance, I've known James Hoffmann for nearly 18 years now, judged him in barista comps, had cocktails with him, he's even been by my home. Love the guy but... /cont
#NCP A #youtube rant. The "block shorts" extensions for Chrome are very useful, when navigating Youtube. Shorts are a horrible addition to the platform. You know, Youtube makes Goog (and influencers with more than 100K subs) a good amount of money and profit already. I don't understand this constant pursuit for max money when you're already making a mint. Just make your product better for the end user. Stop adding featuritus because competitors have it. Make your own product work better.
