BeetBear did his final tally on the butternut squash harvest for this year and came up with these numbers. In total we harvested 144 squashes. Of those we gave away 99 and kept the best 45 for ourselves. Not too bad, considering the year we had. Last year's total was 225 total and don't remember how many we kept, but they lasted us until March. 😀 #gardening #Allotment #BeetBear #NewEngland #zone6b #butternut @npub1v5ap...ny6w image
Finally! A good, soaking rain. Better late than never. Since June, we've had only 5.4 inches (137mm) of rain, & all in brief, heavy showers. It's now been raining steadily for the last 18 hours. A good soaking. So far 1.77 inches (45mm) & looks to continue for a while. BeetBear is relaxing with his last thank-you note after giving away the farm yesterday. I asked him to get the butternut squash report ready for later. 😀 #gardening #Allotment #BeetBear #NewEngland #zone6b @npub1v5ap...ny6w
BeetBear got the remaining corn from this summer's crop pulled up and into the cart. He always plans it so that the first hill planted is the last one removed. Before removal he stops to pay his respects to the corn spirits and give thanks for the excellent crop supplied. He says dad can take care of the shredding business, because he isn't going anywhere near that noisy contraption. 😀 #gardening #Allotment #BeetBear #SweetCorn #NewEngland #zone6b @gardening
We have some VERY mature American arborvitae (Thuja occidentalis) which are reaching over 40 feet (12 meters) bordering one side of the property. My father planted them in the 1950's and they're still going strong. This time of year it's getting ready a HUGE crop of seeds and the birds love them. #gardening #Allotment #birds #Botany #NewEngland #zone6b @npub1v5ap...ny6w image
