BeetBear helped me pick our surplus to put out for the neighbors today. Some of the zucchini was getting to be battleship sized. We offered zucchini, yellow Sunburst squash, and eggplant today. The few cucumbers and tomatoes we kept for our own dinner to go with the home-made coleslaw. Too hot to cook much today. Looks like more storms coming overnight. Well, the 1st band of storms missed us completely, but the 2nd wave came through around 10PM. We had .37 inches (9.4 mm) of rain in about 20 min. with wind gusts to 22 mph (36 kph). So at least the "damaging winds" became only "mildly annoying" winds. Photos of corn just after sunrise this morning with some of it leaning over but otherwise undamaged. The corn is topping out nicely now, but today's forecast has those nasty words: "damaging winds". I have deployed my pipes-and-rope support system to help the corn stay upright. Ropes on the two tallest rows are positioned to protect from winds coming from the "usual" direction. I can't really encumber the plants too much by bundling them from both sides so I make my best guess based on past experience. BeetBear came out to do an inspection tour of the veg patch this afternoon. He found a nice Sunburst squash, a cucumber that is almost ready to pick, selected a couple of Jalapeños for dinner, and observed that the Ailsa Craig onions are starting to "embiggen". He reported all is well and offered encouragement to all the bees and all of the veg plants in general.
