In true dansup fashion, I overengineered the Loops Invites feature. So, to prevent enumeration, we require a captcha before validating the invite key (if you have captchas enabled, which you should) Then we verify the invite key securely (preventing timing attacks) after a 3-5 second delay, and rate limit requests by IP. Then we create a session token which is used in subsequent requests (like username availability/age gate) And expires in 15 minutes. There is more, but that's the gist 😎

Instagram and TikTok are among the most toxic social media platforms when it comes to abuse and hate speech. I am aware of this, and while I have a lot of privilege, it also means that I don't experience very much abuse, so I will need more advice and insight from our community. I think we should organize a town hall where we can discuss ways to improve platform safety and anti-abuse tooling across Pixelfed and Loops with actionable milestones. Let me know if you're interested.

Loops was originally a Pixelfed feature that was launched back in 2019, and it was inspired by Vine. In 2020 it was removed, and remained in the back of my mind until 2023, when I started considering building a separate service. Fast forward to 2025, we launched Pixelfed to the App and Play Stores and shipped quite a few new features, but the later part of 2025 I spent on Loops. Now it's fully open source, server and mobile apps, and federates! But that doesn't mean Pixelfed is dead 😉

Wow, Loops.video has seen a dramatic increase in activity since the new mobile app update was released, setting new DAU and interaction records! Once we fix the profile bug and a few open issues, we will be submitting the app for review on the App Store (and Play Store next month). 2026 = The Year of Loops 🚀
