Just 250 staff remain at Voice of America, after layoffs announced today by Kari Lake, special advisor to the United States Agency for Global Media (USAGM). Lake says 1,400 positions have been eliminated across USAGM, an 85% decrease. When President Trump signed an order in March to shrink USAGM, advocates for the agency, including Republican lawmakers, said its networks were vital for fighting disinformation. The three VOA journalists who sued to stop the terminations were all laid off, but say their legal fight will continue. The White House said in a statement that Trump was deploying the Guardsmen to “address the lawlessness that has been allowed to fester.” Gov. Some good news for a Friday afternoon! After a Verite News and @ProPublica investigation, a Louisiana district judge has vacated the death sentence of Jimmie Duncan, whose 1998 murder conviction was based on allegedly fabricated bite-mark analysis. Judge Alvin Sharp pointed to new testimony that said such analysis is "no longer valid" and "not scientifically defensible." Duncan, now 56, has spent 27 years on death row.
