Born on May 25, 1976, in Douglas, County Cork, he was raised in a family of educators, his father worked for the Irish Department of Education and his mother was a French teacher.  As a teenager he channeled his creativity into music, fronting a rock band and even composing songs, before eventually trading his guitar for the stage. His formal acting debut came in 1996 with the play Disco Pigs, a role he later reprised for the screen in 2001, and this set the stage for a versatile and distinguished career. Over the next two decades Murphy transformed from an up-and-coming actor into one of the most respected, quietly powerful leads in film and television. His breakout role came with the post-apocalyptic thriller 28 Days Later (2002), which introduced him to global audiences.  Over the years he has showcased an impressive range from villainous turns in action and horror films, to deeply human, emotionally layered performances. Notably, his portrayal of Thomas “Tommy” Shelby in the acclaimed series Peaky Blinders (2013–2022) solidified his reputation as a leading actor of depth and subtlety.  Murphy’s creative partnership with acclaimed director Christopher Nolan has been especially fruitful, leading to roles in major films such as Inception, Dunkirk, and the 2023 biopic Oppenheimer. His performance in Oppenheimer earned him top honors, including an Academy Award, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award, a culmination of decades of steady, deliberate artistry."
