Sometimes I can get a little bit disappointed at missing this bird during migration, that other bird in breeding season. But do you know what I saw this past year? Sandhill cranes leaping and bugling in the marsh; a fluffy great-horned owl nestling tucked in their nest; northern flickers doing their delightfully silly air-fencing; a northern shrike, perched on top of their prey; Caspian terns hunting in the water; an American redstart sitting on her nest; a snowy owl, their eyes closed in rest; ospreys building their nest, carrying big sticks to and fro; a rough-legged hawk, hovering as they searched for prey; a curious winter wren, watching me as I watched them; a bobolink singing their strange robot songs as they displayed over a field. How could I possibly be disappointed in all of that?
