🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE image image Guitar legend Jeff Beck passed away on this day in 2023 (January 10) Beck died after suddenly contracting bacterial meningitis, aged 78. He was one of the most respected guitarists in history, making a name for himself with legendary British band the Yardbirds (who launched the careers of three of rock's most famous guitarists, Beck, Eric Clapton, & Jimmy Page), later fronting the Jeff Beck Group with Rod Stewart, future Faces and Rolling Stones member Ronnie Wood and Nicky Hopkins (session keyboard player for Rolling Stones, the Kinks, The Who), and after that…..Beck, Bogert & Appice with the Vanilla Fudge rhythm section. Beck ranked in the top five of Rolling Stone and other magazine's list of 100 greatest guitarists. He was often called a "guitarist's guitarist". Rolling Stone described him as "one of the most influential lead guitarists in rock". Aerosmith lead guitarist Joe Perry called him “the best guitar player on the planet. He is head, hands and feet above all the rest of us, with the kind of talent that appears only once every generation or two." Ozzy Osbourne said he could not express how sad he was to hear of Beck's passing. “It was such an honor to have known Jeff & an incredible honor to have had him play on my most recent album," he said on Twitter. Kiss frontman Paul Stanley also took to Twitter to pay tribute to Beck as "one of the all time guitar masters". "He blazed a trail impossible to follow," Stanley said. "Play on now and forever." Also on Twitter, Jimmy Page wrote, “The six stringed Warrior is no longer here for us to admire the spell he could weave around our mortal emotions. Jeff could channel music from the ethereal. His technique unique. His imaginations apparently limitless. Jeff I will miss you along with your millions of fans.” Ronnie Wood of the Rolling Stones paid tribute to Beck saying he felt like one of his "band of brothers" had left the world. "I want to thank him for all our early days together in Jeff Beck Group, conquering America," he said. Gene Simmons called it “heartbreaking news … no one played guitar like Jeff. Please get ahold of the first two Jeff Beck Group albums and behold greatness. RIP.” Aerosmith’s Joe Perry said “Jeff Beck was the Salvador Dali of guitar, to see him play was to hear the ultimate 6 string alchemist create magic in a world of its own. With his passing, the world is a poorer place.” Alice Cooper commented, "When I was 16 years old, The Spiders, who became the original Alice Cooper band, opened for the Yardbirds. That night I experienced the greatest guitar player I had ever heard. Half a century later Jeff Beck is still the greatest guitarist, PERIOD - The greatest of all time. He was a friend, and there will NEVER be another Jeff Beck. Ever. " Ace Frehley reacted “OMG!!!…Jeff Beck passed away yesterday! One of the greatest and most influential blues rock guitarists in history! My prayers go out to his family & friends…I was lucky enough to see him perform and meet him (my idol) about 9-years ago at the Iridium Club in NYC! Another Rock Icon moving up to rock n roll Heaven! May he R.I.P.! I feel such a loss right now, I can’t verbalize my emotions!” Paul McCartney reflected, “Jeff Beck was a lovely man with a wicked sense of humour who played some of the best guitar music ever to come out of Great Britain. He was a superb technician and could strip down his guitar and put it back together again in time for the show. His unique style of playing was something that no one could match…” Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers longtime guitarist Mike Campbell applauded Beck for his "brilliant technique" and "personality" in his playing, including a sense of humour, expressed through the growl of his wah-wah effects. Campbell also credited Beck with expanding the boundaries of the blues. Eric Clapton once said, "With Jeff, it's all in his hands". In his autobiography, Nick Mason recalls that during 1967 Pink Floyd had wanted to recruit Beck to be its guitarist after the departure of Syd Barrett but "None of us had the nerve to ask him." Over the years he collaborated with a number of respected artists, including contributing to Jon Bon Jovi's solo debut album "Blaze of Glory" in 1990, playing the main solo of the album's title song, which was also the theme song to the movie Young Guns II. Although not going on to achieve the level of mainstream commercial success as his fellow Yardbirds guitar legends Clapton and Page, Beck earned wide critical praise and received the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance six times and Best Pop Instrumental Performance once. In 2014 he received the British Academy's Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice: as a member of the Yardbirds (1992) and as a solo artist (2009). 🌊 SURF 'N TURF 🏝️ -THE BORACAY ISLAND LIFE- THE DOOMSDAY DJ: TUNES FOR THE POST APOCALYPSE image image Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jim Croce was born James Joseph Croce in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on this day in 1943 (January 10) Between 1966 and 1973, Croce released five studio albums and numerous singles. During this period, he took a series of odd jobs to pay bills while he continued to write, record, and perform concerts. His breakthrough came in 1972; his third album, “You Don't Mess Around with Jim”, produced three charting singles, including "Time in a Bottle", which reached #1 after his death. The follow-up album, “Life and Times”, contained the song "Bad, Bad Leroy Brown", which was the only #1 hit he had during his lifetime. On the night of Thursday, September 20, 1973, during Croce's “Life and Times” tour and the day before his single "I Got a Name" was released, Croce and all five others on board (pilot Robert N. Elliott, Croce's bandmate Maury Muehleisen, comedian George Stevens, manager and booking agent Kenneth D. Cortese, and road manager Dennis Rast) were killed when their chartered Beechcraft E18S crashed into a tree during takeoff. Jim Croce was just 30. An hour before the crash, Croce had completed a concert at Northwestern State University's Prather Coliseum in Natchitoches, and was flying to Sherman, Texas, for a concert at Austin College. Another great talent who passed away so very young… #jimcroce, #dailyrockhistory, #timeinabottle, #songwriter, #singer, #youdontmessaroundwithjim, #badbadleroybrown, #dailyrockhistory, #thisdayinmusic, #onthisday "Pure signal, no noise" Credits Goes to the respective Author ✍️/ Photographer📸 🐇 🕳️
