In August 2019, a young girl named Bethan visited Poole Museum in Dorset, England, with her mother. Inspired by the exhibits and a conversation about the purpose of museums, Bethan decided to donate her most treasured possession—a small rock—to the museum. She requested that it be placed behind glass so others could appreciate it as she did. The museum staff honored her heartfelt request, and the rock was displayed in a glass case on the second floor, labeled “Bethan’s Rock.” #museums image

Venice: A City Built on an Underwater Forest. Since 421 AD, the city of #Venice has stood on a foundation of millions of wooden tree trunks driven deep into the clay bed of its lagoon. Rather than using steel or concrete, the city was built primarily on alder wood, with some oak piles for extra support. Over time, these wooden pillars, submerged in saltwater, have petrified, hardening to a stone-like consistency. #history
In late 1800s, a quiet man with a camera wandered the windswept plains of southwestern #France. His name was Félix Arnaudin, and what he captured was a way of life already fading into memory. Among his most haunting images were the #shepherds of the Landes, perched on towering wooden stilts known as échasses. Dressed in thick wool cloaks and wide-brimmed hats, these men weren’t performers or curiosities—they were survivors of the bog. #History image
