For the first time in our nation’s history, two Black women are serving in the Senate at the same time — Senators Angela Alsobrooks and Lisa Blunt Rochester. It was my honor to swear in these history makers to the 119th Congress today.
As District Attorney of San Francisco, I had the honor of performing some of our country’s first same-sex marriages. As Attorney General of California, I proudly pronounced my friends Kris and Sandy spouses for life after we won the fight to strike down Prop 8. As Vice President, I stood with President Biden as we finally protected marriage equality in federal law. As we celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the Respect for Marriage Act, let us remember the joy of progress while continuing the fight for equality for all.
