I’ve had a bee in my bonnet for a week, and this might be a solution. SQLite3 really is very fast. Here a query of a JSON element on 290k records in a table of 1.2 million records.
Edit: of course: SELECT DISTINCT(js->>'desc') AS place FROM rec WHERE user = 'jpm' AND place LIKE 'r%'; — I added place later and forgot to adapt
