#Apple: We need to lock down devices against #competition to protect user #privacy! Researchers: The #AppleWatch collects vast amounts of intimate #health and #fitness data. Users have little choice regarding how this data is processed. We publicly #reverseengineer the watch's wireless protocols and discovered multiple #security issues. We break out of Apple's #WalledGarden demonstrating practical #interoperability with enhanced privacy controls and data autonomy."
Potentially groundbreaking court ruling against #Meta: "A German court has ruled that Meta must pay €5,000 to a πŸ‡©πŸ‡ͺ #Facebook user who sued the platform for embedding #tracking in third-party websites." "This may very well be one of the most substantial rulings coming out of Europe this year, ... €5,000 in damages for one visitor adds up quickly if you have tens of thousands of visitors, or even millions." #privacy #digitalrights #gdpr #TrackingFreeAds
So now that both #Apple and #Meta have formally appealed the #DMA fines that are just pocket money for them, can we please start calling those lawsuits for what they are: intimidation similar to #SLAPPs. They are designed to bind public resources for years, which regulators will lack for enforcing the #DigitalMarketsAct, to intimidate civil servants in the @European Commission, and to show us that #BigTech is above the law and that we are helpless. Let's not be intimidated. #ResistBigTech
After the #Microsoft frenzy last week and the #Apple disaster yesterday, on today's menu is the @European Commission #DMA compliance workshop with #Alphabet #Google. What should I do?
Today I will spend hours in the @European Commission's #DMA workshop with #Apple so you don't have to. It'll be painful, it'll be funny, it'll be hot! πŸ˜† The workshop starts with Apple lawyers speaking time in which they are supposed to explain how they comply with the #DigitalMarketsAct. Instead, they waste everybody's time with marketing BS and pointless rants against the law (or as they say "the Commission's interpretation of the law"). What a waste.
Fun times ahead in Europe πŸ™„ "The @European Commission has set out its plans to give #police access to digital information, including by cracking down on β€œnon-cooperative” messaging services [like @Signal and #Telegram] and helping build technologies to break #encryption." #DigitalRights #privacy #HumanRights #confidentiality #cybersecurity
