The true story of how the ADL was formed ✡️
TLDR:
The ADL was formed to defend Leo Frank, a Jewish man who was president of the Jewish fraternity B'nai B'rith and Superintendent of the National Pencil Company, who brutally-raped and murdered 13 year old Mary Phagan. He then tried to frame a black man for the crime.
It didn't work - Frank was so guilty that even the KKK came out in support of the black man, as the evidence was obvious:
- Blood and hair evidence at the scene
- 20 other young girls testified that Frank sexually harassed them too
- Frank's own private detective agencies and defenders called him guilty
- Conviction upheld by 13 courts and judges
Despite this, the ADL sprung into existence to defend his actions, claiming HE was the true victim because the local outrage over the crime was "antisemitic"
Frank was convicted and later had his death sentence commuted. At which point the Christian locals gathered, broke him out of jail, and hanged him.
To this day, 112 years later, the ADL continues to hold strong that the whole thing was "antisemitism", and celebrates his life as their origin story.
